Lorry falls 60 metres from bridge on M6 in Cheshire

A lorry has plummeted 60 metres from a bridge on the M6 in Cheshire.

The vehicle fell from the Thelwall Viaduct near Warrington - between junctions 20 and 21 on the motorway - and landed on an embankment below, police said.

It happened at around 6.50pm on Monday. It's thought the driver of the lorry has not suffered life-threatening injuries.

They were rescued by fire crews who lowered themselves down to the lorry.

Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service used water to cool the vehicle and stopped a leak of around 1,000 litres of fuel.

Police have advised motorists to avoid the area, where three northbound lanes are expected to remain closed until Tuesday morning, the Cheshire Constabulary said.

Just one lane remains open with a reduced speed limit.
