Yorkshire Coast Residents Struggle to Access NHS Dental Care

A new survey by Healthwatch North Yorkshire has highlighted the ongoing difficulties people on the Yorkshire Coast are facing.

The findings reveal a mismatch between public perception and the reality of NHS dentistry, coupled with significant barriers to accessing timely and affordable treatment.

Many people believe they have a right to register with an NHS dentist in the same way they do with a GP. However, this is not the case. The survey found that 68% of respondents believed they had a right to be taken on as a permanent patient by an NHS dentist. This misconception can lead to frustration and confusion when patients discover they are not guaranteed an appointment, even if they have been seen by the practice before.

The unpopularity of the current NHS dental contract, which many dentists feel does not adequately cover their costs, is leading to a decline in the number of practices offering NHS treatment. This leaves patients with limited options, forcing them to travel long distances, join lengthy waiting lists, or pay privately for care they may not be able to afford.

The survey also revealed particular concerns about access to dental care for children. Some parents reported being told they had to register as private patients themselves in order for their children to receive NHS treatment. This practice is a breach of the NHS contract.

Healthwatch North Yorkshire is calling for a fundamental reform of NHS dentistry to address these issues. They recommend a GP-style registration system that would give patients a permanent link to a dental practice. This would provide much-needed continuity of care and improve oral health outcomes.

Other recommendations from Healthwatch include:

  • Increased funding for NHS dentistry to make more appointments available.
  • Improved communication from dental practices about their policies on patient registration and NHS charges.
  • A public awareness campaign to educate people about how the NHS dental system works.

Craig Derek, Marketing and Communications Officer for Healthwatch North Yorkshire, emphasized the need for urgent action to address the growing crisis in dental care:

Healthwatch North Yorkshire urges residents to contact them if they are experiencing difficulties accessing NHS dental care. They can be reached via email at hello@healthwatchnorthyorkshire.co.uk, phone on 01423 788128, or through their website.

The organization also encourages people to write to their local MP to demand better access to dental services.
