A mother and daughter from the Yorkshire Coast are running 31 miles in January to raise money for the Motor Neurone Disease Association ably assisted by pet goat Thumper.
Jackie Wilson and her daughter Megan were inspired to take on the challenge after a close family friend was diagnosed with the condition in May 2023.
The friend had previously been diagnosed with prostate cancer in early 2023 and had received the all clear after surgery. However, he began experiencing difficulty flexing his foot and walking, and after a series of tests and scans, was diagnosed with MND.
Jackie, who admits that running is not her thing, says she was inspired to take on the challenge after Megan saw it advertised on Facebook. The pair are running a mile a day throughout January, and have already raised over £500 with the help of family and friends. They hope to boost this total to £1000.
To make their runs more interesting, Jackie and Megan have been taking one of their pet goats, Thumper, with them. Thumper, who was hand-reared by Megan, enjoys going out for runs because he thinks he's a dog.
The pair have been sharing updates on their progress on the Playdale Farm Park Facebook page, where they have posted videos and photos of their runs with Thumper.
They hope that their story will help to raise awareness of MND and encourage people to donate to the Motor Neurone Disease Association.
Jackie says:
"I can’t run for toffee but I’m running 31 miles in January to raise money for MND Association, I’m doing this for John and his family and all the other strong, resilient people like him who are dealing with this cruel disease in the hope one day there will be a cure."
