Yorkshire Coast Gardener Cycles the Length of Britain for Local Charity

John at John O'Groats after cycling more than 1300 mile. Pictured here with his two children James and Eddie who met him at the finish line.

A Hinderwell cyclist who has ridden the length of Great Britain wants to use the adventure to raise money for a Whitby charity.

A Hinderwell gardener, who cycled 1300 miles from Land’s End to John O’Groats, is raising money for a Whitby charity that helps young people with disabilities and special needs.

John Treacher, 40, cycled the Great British Divide – a largely off-road route from the bottom to nearly the top of the country over 19 days.

Since completing the ride John has decided to use his adventure for a good cause and is raising money for InterActive Whitby and District. His efforts will help fund up to 20 disabled young people and support staff to go on a weekend of adventure, challenge and fun at Peat Rigg, Cropton, near Pickering.

To take 20 young people and the required staff to Peat Rigg costs £5600.

John said:

“I had a lot of time to think while pedalling up some of the country’s most gruelling hills, and one thing I kept coming back to was how lucky I am, in so many different ways, to be able to do this.

“The great thing about adventures like I just did, is the combination of feeling scared, excited and challenged. It gave me a real sense of achievement. Everyone I met on the way asked if I was raising money and that inspired me to find some way to support other people to get a taste of adventure.

"Everyone I met on the way asked me who the charity is that I was doing the ride for. All my friends and family asked me too. I had no idea if id make it to the end so I decided to wait until I had before asking people to sponsor me.

"Well, I’ve finished it now. So please give what you can, to help the young people that InterActive Whitby and District work with to go on a great holiday weekend of adventure, challenge and fun at Peat Rigg.”

Sally Sansom, coordinator and project leader at InterActive Whitby and District, said:

“We’re really grateful for everyone who is sponsoring John for his epic bike ride. Taking the young people we support to Peat Rigg is such an amazing opportunity to have fun, build friendships and have the chance to do what everyone else does.”

InterActive Whitby and District has supported hundreds of children, young people and their families by providing the bits that other organisations don’t. They offer inclusive opportunities for young people with disabilities and special needs.

InterActive is a Whitby-based charity, working with local children and young people of all abilities. Their specific focus is on those with disabilities or special needs, for whom they run regular weekend and holiday activities. They also provide inclusive holiday play schemes and a pre-school play session, integrating mainstream and disabled children.

There is more information about their activities at www.whitbyinteractive.co.uk
