Yorkshire Coast Braces for Strong Winds and Heavy Rain This Weekend

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for strong winds and heavy rain across Yorkshire & Humber.

The warning is in effect from 3 PM on Friday, December 6th to 6 AM on Sunday, December 8th, 2024. Coastal areas are expected to experience the most severe conditions, with wind gusts potentially reaching up to 80 mph.

The Met Office warns of potential travel disruptions, with road, rail, air, and ferry services likely to be affected. Driving conditions could be particularly challenging due to spray and flooding, possibly leading to road closures. Coastal communities are advised to exercise caution as large waves and beach material could pose a danger to life.

In preparation for the storm, the Met Office advises residents to:

  • Secure loose items outside their homes, such as bins, garden furniture, and fences.
  • Check road conditions and travel timetables before embarking on journeys and consider amending travel plans if necessary.
  • Prepare for potential power outages by gathering torches, batteries, mobile phone power packs, and other essential items.
  • Stay informed about weather updates as warnings can change quickly.

Coastal areas are particularly vulnerable during this weather event. The Met Office urges people to be aware of the dangers of large waves, even from the shore, as they can sweep individuals out to sea. Those walking near cliffs should be cautious and keep dogs on a lead.

Residents in areas prone to flooding are advised to review their flood plans and ensure their emergency flood kits are ready. In case of an emergency, residents are advised to call 999 and request the Coastguard.

The strong winds and heavy rain are associated with a deep low-pressure system expected to cross England and Wales starting Friday afternoon. This system will also bring heavy rain, particularly to the north and west, with some areas potentially receiving up to 70 mm of rainfall. Hill snow is also anticipated in northern regions above 200 meters.
