A giant Trojan Horse built in Bridlington from nothing but cardboard and sticky backed plastic has been confirmed as a Guinness World Record holder.
The horse was built at Bridlington Spa in October. Over 180 volunteers of all ages were involved in the project,
The horse stood at 7.85m tall, 7.02m wide and 16.85m long. It took almost a week to construct, with every section being observed by independent witnesses and measurement experts to ensure it complied with the strict guidelines from Guinness World Records. Their team have verified the evidence and confirmed that the horse now holds the world record for the largest cardboard sculpture in the world.
Lee Threadgold from Animated Objects, who designed the gigantic structure commented:
“We’re thrilled to have broken the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS title for the Largest cardboard sculpture as part of The Odyssey. It’s taken a huge amount of planning and we’d like to thank everyone involved for all their hard work in helping to bring this epic sculpture to life.”
“We hope it will inspire young people from across Yorkshire Coast region and beyond to explore how engineering, maths, design, and large-scale art can be combined to create wonders of their own. It is a huge honour and a real testament to the power of teamwork and community. As one of my favourite movie characters once said, ‘If you put your mind to it, you can accomplish anything!’ I hope The Trojan Horse inspires people to think exactly that.”
The horse was made from recycled cardboard, and post construction it was broken down carefully and donated to a variety of different organisations such as food banks who are using it for their food boxes. It is even being used by the creators of GRUE!, an arts project in Scarborough.
The gigantic Trojan Horse time lapseFollowing what can only be described as an epic week, as promised here's the time lapse of the construction of The Trojan Horse at Bridlington Spa as part of The Odyssey - An Epic Adventure on the Yorkshire Coast. Be prepared - even at high speed it's around 15 minutes long! We'll keep you updated re: the measurements and if our attempt has been successful when we hear back from the adjudicators. Thanks again to everyone who was involved in the building of this biodegradable creature of legend, and to all the thousands of visitors who helped to create such a positive atmosphere over the weekend. It's a huge turning point in the story of Odysseus - the warrior king who invented the horse to bring the Trojan Wars to an end. In Homer's ancient tale, the horse was used to sneak soldiers into the city of Troy and bring about its doom... But in our updated version of the story, visitors and makers were asked to vote as to whether they would follow this path or use the horse as a peace offering to the Trojans instead. The majority chose the latter option, so our story will follow their lead. The Trojan Wars have been brought to a peaceful conclusion in our tale, but Odysseus now has to start his epic journey home along the coast, with different chapters in different towns over the next eight months. It's a story with magic; mystery; monsters and more - Expect to see lanterns; large scale puppetry and lots of family fun on the way. Look out for the launch of his journey in Whitby on the evening of Thursday 3rd November... it's going to be epic!

The event was staged as part of a Yorkshire Coast BID back project to tell the epic story of The Odyssey but set in locations on the Yorkshire Coast.
Over 2000 people visited Bridlington Spa to see the Trojan Horse and Lee Threadgold says they have had a say in where the story goes next.
