The Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards took place last night with Bridlington Spa picking up a top award.
Now in its 13th year, the event saw the region’s tourism sector come together at the Doubletree by Hilton in Hull
A total of 65 hopeful finalists were in the running for the awards, which recognise the best individuals, attractions and hospitality businesses in the area’s tourism industry.
Among the winners was Bridlington Spa which picked up the award for Remarkable Business Events Venue.
General manager at the Spa, Mark Lonsdale says it's great recognition for the venue.
Judges said:
"Bridlington Spa is located in the centre of the town overlooking the bay and beaches. The spa offers a total of 8 conference rooms ranging from the Royal Hall, which holds up to 3,800 standing, down to a small meeting room for up to 5 people. Enjoy spectacular views from these function suites of the sea and harbour. The Spa is a magnet for world class talent and a versatile venue for weddings and Birthday parties, as well as any other celebrations. All catered for by an inhouse catering team, enthusiastic staff and first class sustainability practices."
Mark Lonsdale says the award recognises the hard work of everyone at Bridlington Spa.
One of the biggest successes on the night was Laurel Vines, of Aike, Driffield, which picked up two awards: the Remarkable Ethical, Responsible and Sustainable Tourism Award and Remarkable Local Producer of the Year.
The judges were full of praise, remarking that:
“The development and growth since starting Laurel Vines Vineyard and Winery in 2008 is testament to the innovation and vision that clearly drives their continued success.”
Hull Truck Theatre took home the Remarkable Accessible & Inclusive Award, with judges commending the staff’s commitment to
“ensuring the venue is for every person- no matter what the accessibility needs may be”.
Councillor Nick Coultish, portfolio holder for culture, leisure and tourism at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said:
“The Remarkable East Yorkshire Tourism Awards are a celebration of all that is good about the industry locally, recognising the hard work, talent and dedication of those who work in it.

Remarkable Accessible and Inclusive Tourism Award:
Hull Truck Theatre, Hull
Judges said: "It is truly amazing how much Hull Truck Theatre has to offer. From meeting the cast if you're feeling a little nervous, to looking after a guide dog- it is evident that the staff are committed to ensuring the venue is for every person- no matter what the accessibility needs may be. With the opportunity to see and discuss the theatre prior to booking one of the many shows on offer, the judges felt that staff are the real gem of the theatre. Going above and beyond, creating relaxing first visits, encouraging repeat custom, and making sure that every visit is memorable."
Remarkable Self- Catering Accommodation of the Year:
Broadgate Farm Cottages, Beverley
Judges said: "Broadgate Farm Cottages is a truly spectacular property set on the edge of the Westwood. The property has a cosy feel and is beautifully furnished. The owner and her staff will do their upmost to cater to any special requirements you may have to make your stay memorable, while their years of experience and knowledge of the area allows them to ensure their guests make the most of their stay."
Remarkable Ethical, Responsible and Sustainable Tourism Award (sponsored by HPSS):
Laurel Vines Vineyard and Winery, Driffield
Judges said: "The development and growth since starting Laurel Vines Vineyard and Winery in 2008 is testament to the innovation and vision that clearly drives their continued success. Not without some significant challenges along the way, they have diversified into tourism and added to the business incrementally in a responsible, ethical and sustainable way. The judges felt that from arrival on a very busy "Community Grape Harvest" day, the team at Laurel Vines provided a warm welcome and their passion both in their product and everything associated with it was embedded in all aspects of the business."
Remarkable Visitor Attraction of the Year
Williams Den, North Cave
Judges said: "William’s Den allows children to use their imagination without limits. It’s a simple concept, yet a unique attraction for the area. Extremely well designed and thought out, the varied play areas allow children to have infinite fun and enjoyment. The judges thought that the variety of home-made ice creams are exceptional, and the menu in the restaurant provides a wide range of choices. A wonderful experience for children and families, who are sure to want to return."
Remarkable New Tourism Business of the Year
Winner: Trinity Room, Hull
Judges said: "The Trinity Room at Hull Minster is a very special place. With such a warm welcome greeting visitors as they arrive, the friendly staff and management create a great ambience. There is a passion to work as sustainably as possible, and they continually work towards reducing waste and all packaging to be compostable. The food is excellent in both taste and quality with all being made either on site using locally sourced produce or sourced from local suppliers. Staff and volunteers are encouraged to reach their full potential and given every opportunity to thrive."
Highly Commended: Dumble Farm, Beverley
Judges said: "Dumble Farm offers a totally unique experience to visitors. The opportunity to spend time close to with the Highland Herd, both grooming and feeding on the safari is priceless. The safari experience gives an insight into the massive conservation program in operation, and the opportunity to see wildlife close up. The passion and knowledge of the owners is second to none with the welfare of the herd and wildlife a priority - it is a privilege to visit. Creating this visitor attraction has allowed everyday visitors the opportunity to have this animal experience."
Remarkable Cuppa Award:
Winner: Drewton's Farm Shop, North Cave
Judges said: "At Drewton's you are met with a view of the East Yorkshire countryside, neat and well-maintained grounds and the cafe is light and airy with a hint of formality. The judges felt that the staff were welcoming, professional and knowledgeable about the extensive menu, daily specials and dietary requirements. With excellent presentation of freshly prepared food, a passion for local produce is apparent and lives up to the strong reputation held for serving fresh, locally sources and ethically produced food and drink."
Highly Commended: The Balloon Tree Farm Shop & Café, Stamford Bridge
Judges said: "The experience begins the moment you pull into the car park as you are met with a colourful display of farm produce some of which also features on the menu. The judges received an enthusiastic welcome into the bright and spacious café with views out to the beautiful café garden where additional seating is provided in heated gazebos. With diners from all generations, the menu offers a good selection of dishes to satisfy every appetite from a full English breakfast to light lunches, salads, and daily specials, not to mention some amazing cakes! For younger visitors, to let off steam there’s a children’s play area complete with a tractor and digger. A visit can be finished off with a browse of the gift, bakery and farm shop stocked with fresh farm produce and local products."

Judges said: "A hidden gem in the heart of the rural countryside, yet on the edge of amenities. Wolds Village provides luxurious guest rooms, each individually designed in different periods, leaving guests spoilt for choice. Greeted in the morning with a quality breakfast, guests are left feeling fuelled and ready for the day. With rural tourism being at the heart of this business, the building is steeped in history, full of original features and artifact making this Bed and Breakfast totally unique. Owing to its picturesque surroundings, popular with many walking and cycling enthusiasts, the judges felt that the woodland and open countryside walks within the grounds are a bonus to this relaxing retreat."

Hotham's Gin School & Distillery, Hull
Judges said: "Launched in 2018, Hotham’s boutique distillery and gin school is a fantastic addition to Hull. Allowing guests to fully immerse themselves in an interactive experience, Hotham’s have won an array of awards which is a solid testimony to their current success. The judges felt that the team were passionate and welcoming, and the experience of creating a bespoke gin, bottling, waxing, and sampling it, made for a fabulous afternoon."

Judges said: "TribFest is one of the biggest tribute music festivals in the world, and the whole event is set in the beautiful grounds of Sledmere. The event has a real visible history of successfully creating a safe, family-friendly, enjoyable weekend at a good value pricing point, and annually brings high numbers of visitors into the region from around the UK. Their clear policies on reducing waste on-site, using local contractors, accessibility, marketing, sustainability and development is impressive."

Judges said: "Acorn Glade is a truly magical place. From the moment you arrive, you are transported to a tranquil fairy tale escape. Every corner of the site has been carefully transformed, from the enchanting woodland lake walk to the glamping pods and lodges. The judges felt that the owner made sure every aspect of the stay was perfect and went out of their way to talk about the nature found onsite.One of the highlights mentioned by the judges is the resident alpacas and wallabies. Not usually common in the East Riding, and so, a unique treat to stay beside them for a weekend!"

Winner: Laurel Vines Vineyard and Winery, Driffield
Judges said: "Visitors to Laurel Vines can expect to enjoy a glass of locally produced quality wine whilst sat on the south west facing patio looking out over the well-tended vineyards, where wildlife is allowed to run free in this beautiful East Yorkshire countryside setting. The staff are extremely knowledgeable and passionate about the whole process of wine making from vine to bottle. They are very much aware of the need to protect the environment and to be a sustainable business and have employed various measures to help in their aim to be carbon neutral by 2025. There is a high degree of local community and regional engagement, with regular winery tours, themed nights and volunteer harvesting events. A newly developed kitchen using locally produced produce is a great addition to the business."
Highly Commended: Soanes Poultry
Judges said: "Soane's is a well established, local, family business and is the biggest in this category supplying their products to local, regional and national butchers, farm shops and restaurants. Their aim is to produce quality tasting chicken rather than mass produce for supermarkets and the company prides itself on its high levels of animal welfare in all stages of the process. Proud to be from East Yorkshire, their poultry products are branded with "Reared for flavour on our Yorkshire farms" and carry the details of the farm from which it originates. A great supporter of the local community through their support of local farmers, charitable work and employment."
Remarkable Restaurant Award
Highfield 1864, Driffield
Judges said: "The Highfield 1864 in Driffield offers a wonderful dining experience in a stunning setting. An extremely worthy finalist, nothing is too much trouble at this amazing venue. Every detail of the menu is carefully planned and designed to make the most of every ingredient. Focusing strongly on East Yorkshire, locally grown, foraged and seasonally sourced produce is used to create unique dishes inspired by cross-continental influences. A truly memorable meal is sure to be had at the Highfield 1864."
