Whitby's June Crime Figures Down Significantly

Crime and Antisocial behaviour in Whitby fell significantly last month.

Year on year there was around a twenty per cent reduction in overall crime in most areas of the town and a forty four per cent reduction in the West Cliff ward according to figures from North Yorkshire Police.

Inspector Martin Dennison says the anti social behaviour figures also fell.

The town's Police officers say the year on year figures show drops in most crime areas but there has been a slight increase in violence against the Person offences.

Inspector Martin Dennison says some people have been surprised by the reductions.

Inspector Dennison says there are been drops in overall crime figures across the town.

In a report presented to Whitby Town Council the local officers said:

"We have seen a rise in damage to the beach chalets, in order to help reduce this we are actively engaging with those working in the area and increasing our patrols, especially on a night-time.

There has also been an increase in the number of violent incidents especially outside public houses. We are ensuring we have a visible presence during peak times such as the weekend.

Youths in the area are still a main focus. we are constantly engaging and working alongside early help to tackle issues.

Repeating theft offenders have also been served barring letters from shops."
