Whitby Volunteers Praised by Mayor

Whitby's volunteers are being heralded by the town's Mayor.

Tomorrow sees the start of national volunteers week. Volunteers' Week is an annual celebration of the contribution millions of people make across the UK through volunteering in their communities. It's co-ordinated by The National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO).

Councillor Rob Dalrymple says Whitby has a strong tradition of volunteering. He says there are lots off opportunities to get involved in the town.

The Mayor says he is impressed by the level of volunteer support there is in the town for organisations like the Whitby Literary And Philosophical Society who run the Whitby Museum.

Tomorrow sees the start of national volunteers week and in Whitby the Mayor is highlighting the work done by the many individuals who give up their time to help organisations like Pannett Park, the Lit and Phil and the RNLI.

Councillor Dalrymple says people are often surprised to discover their town councillors are also volunteers.

Rob says the councillors, like the town's other volunteers put in some significant hours.

Volunteers Week takes place 1-7 June every year. It's a chance to recognise the fantastic contribution volunteers make to our communities and say thank you. Volunteers’ Week is supported and celebrated by small grassroots organisations as well as larger, household-name charities.

NCVO say that 16.3m people volunteered through a group, club or organisation in 2020/21 with almost 9.2m people reporting volunteering at least once a month.
