Whitby Town Double Home Win Tally To Ease Pressure

The Blues put five points between themselves and the NPL Premier's bottom four, with victory on Saturday.

Whitby picked up their second home win of the season, in style, at the Towbar Express Stadium.

Here's the story of the match with This Is The Coast Extra commentator Paul Connolly, with Will Berwick:

However, it was away side Mickleover Sports who led inside four minutes.

Whitby levelled on the half hour as Sam Collins got down the left and fired across the face of goal. Goalkeeper Jusuf Mersin blocked from Steven Walker, but Aaron Haswell was on target to blast home the loose ball for 1-1.

He spoke to Whitby Town TV after the game:

Walker, Town's runaway top scorer, wasn't kept quiet for long. Three minutes before half-time, the Seasiders broke at speed, Nathan Thomas played in Connor Simpson, whose shot was parried by Mersin for Walker to slot in his 14th goal of the season.

Even the loss of Walker to injury couldn't halt Whitby's progress. Five minutes into stoppage time, they had a penalty for handball. With Walker being their usual spot-kick expert, it was Thomas who did the honours, sending the Mersin the wrong way and finding the bottom-left corner for 3-1.

The Derbyshire visitors came within a whisker of making it 3-2, only for Bland and in-form centre-half Frankie Whelan to block on the goal-line.

At the other end, Whitby nearly put the result beyond doubt as Simpson's shot was deflected off defender Will Atkinson with Mersin helplessly wrong-footed as the ball rolled inches wide.

Haswell then almost grabbed Whitby's fourth and his second of the afternoon. The versatile left-footer clipped a 25-yard free-kick that was headed goalwards, only for Mersin's knee to send the ball up onto the crossbar.

Just two minutes later, Town finished the job. A well-worked free-kick saw skipper Jas Sukar flicking on for Whelan to loop a header in from close range for 4-1, on 80 minutes.

Town manager Gary Liddle spoke to Whitby Town TV post-match:
