Whitby Tin Ghaut Plans Would Need Significant Work

Plans to revamp the area around Whitby's Swing Bridge would require significant work to the former Tin Ghaut Car Park.

A multimillion pound revamp of the area around Whitby Swing bridge could see a controversial turning area made permanent.

The turning circle on the former Tin Ghaut Car Park would be formalised and a new public seating area would be introduced overlooking the harbour.

Highways Manager for the area - Richard Marr - says there could also be a new archway entry to the public area, but says all the proposals are up for debate.

A public consultation has been launched on the £2.3m Whitby Public Realm proposals. The idea is to improve the public realm in and around the swing bridge, improving the experience for both residents and visitors. It will also improve non-motorised links between the east and the west of the town, supporting other Whitby Town investment plan projects.

The consultation aims to explore people’s views on how the scheme could look. Among it's suggestions are proposals for the Tin Ghaut area. it says:

"the turning circle would be formalised, and planting introduced, providing a space for new seating to enjoy views of the harbour."

Area Highways manager - Richard Marr - says the Tin Ghaut site has some challenges.

A number of exhibitions are being held at Whitby Coliseum Centre theatre with project officers on hand to answer any questions about the proposals.

Dates and times are as follows:

  • Wednesday, November 15, from 10am to 7pm.
  • Saturday, November 18, from 11am to 4pm.

Maps and images for all six zones can be found at can be found at https://www.northyorks.gov.uk/your-council/consultations-and-engagement/current-consultations/whitby-public-realm-consultation

The consultation will close on Friday 22 December 2023.
