Whitby Passenger Ferry Could Replace Swing Bridge

A two week closure of Whitby Swing Bridge in November could see a ferry service introduced in the town.

A two hundred thousand pound programme of repair works is being carried out on Whitby's Swing Bridge from November 20th resulting in a closure of the bridge for the duration of the works.

Local Councillor - Neil Swannick says a ferry service is one of the ideas being looked at to help local people deal with the closure.

The bridge was due to close for the first two weeks of October but the £200,000 scheme will now take place from November 20th.

The essential works will involve the removal of the existing road surface down to the steel deck. The bridge will then undergo waterproofing and resurfacing, incorporating a lighter coloured surface to reduce heat absorption and expansion of the bridge deck. Repainting is also planned for next year.

The footpaths will be widened to improve safety for pedestrians during busy periods.

The road will be closed to traffic and pedestrians throughout the works with a shuttle bus service transporting passengers to the other side of the town. It will remain open for boats to pass in and out of the harbour.
