Whitby Museums Work Together for Fish and Ships Festival

Whitby's Annual Fish and Ships Festival gets underway tomorrow.

The event will celebrate the town’s rich maritime heritage with a programme of cookery demonstrations, live music and street entertainment.

Helen Berry is curator at the Pannett Art Gallery, she says the town's museums are working together to create a new experience for visitors over the weekend.

The Pannett Art Gallery, The Captain Cook Museum and Whitby Museum are creating a 3D public art work on Endeavour Wharfe.

Helen Berry says the work will involve public participation.

The Fish and Ships Festival will take place accross the weekend of May 18th and 19th. A Seafood Kitchen marquee will be hosting cookery demonstrations from local chefs including:

  • Phil Akrill, Head Chef at The Talbot, Malton
  • Paul Gildroy, Head Chef at The Magpie, Whitby
  • Maggie Lubaszewska of Trenchers, Whitby
  • Dan Hargreaves, Chef and Owner of Embers, Scarborough
  • Andrew Nightingale, Head Chef of The Hare and Hounds, Hawsker, Whitby
  • Jon Appleby, Head Chef, The Feversham Arms, Helmsley

Local fisherman will be demonstrating the true art of pot sewing and net mending, and Endeavour Wharf will be filled with stalls featuring local produce.

There will be free live music all weekend, including local bands like Old Time Sailors and Sunbeam at the Endeavour Wharf Music Tent.

There will be street entertainment with Animated Objects returning to the festival with their new walkabout act, Galleons Ahoy.

Whitby Abbey will be opening its doors for free to residents in YO21 and YO22 postcodes over the festival weekend.
