The winning design will be printed as the Mayoral Christmas Card and sent to King Charles III
At the beginning of October the Town Mayor of Whitby, Councillor Linda Wild, launched her Christmas Card Competition, inviting local young people to submit a design on the theme of “A Whitby Christmas”. The winning design will be printed as the Mayoral Christmas Card and sent out to other councils, friends, and contacts across the world, including the King of the United Kingdom.
Whitby Town Council say that the the response to the call for designs as been fantastic saying:
"East Whitby Academy and Stakesby Primary Academy both deserve a special mention for their fabulous contribution, each submitting a brilliant selection of imaginative and creative designs.
There were also some fantastic designs submitted by pupils from other local schools, including Hawsker and Fylingdales schools, as well as schools from outside the area."
Whitby's Mayor, Councillor Linda Wild said
“Once again the standard of work is so high that making a decision was incredibly difficult. Each young artist had really considered the theme and put a great deal of effort into their picture.”
With over 150 pictures to choose from Councillor Wild had to spend a long time considering each design, eventually selecting one overall winner, 6 year-old Alya from East Whitby Academy. Alya wins a book token for herself and one for her school. In addition, on the evening of 18th November Alya will be joining the Town Mayor on the This is the Coast Radio Stage at the opening of Whitby Christmas Festival for the spectacular switch on of the Christmas lights.
The standard of work was so high this year that Councillor Wild has also selected four designs to be awarded Highly Commended.
These are by Gracie, age 8 and Leo, 9, who both attend Stakesby Primary Academy,
Also highly commended were Lyla age 7 from East Whitby Academy,
and Nula, 10, a pupil at Hawsker C of E Primary School.
All the designs will be on display in the Pannett Art Gallery from Wednesday 24th November – Sunday 5th December 10.30am – 4.30pm.
Please note, the gallery is closed on Mondays and last admission is at 4pm. Admission to the Art Gallery is FREE.
