Whitby RNLI's new Shannon Class Lifeboat is back in the town after scheduled maintenance.
Whitby's Shannon Class lifeboat arrived back in the town yesterday after having a good scrub down and check over as part of the scheduled maintenance programme for this class of lifeboat.
Not long after arriving back at the stations the volunteer crew were tasked to launch. A member of the public had reported a paddle boarder in difficulty off the pier ends. However before the crew left the station the Coastguard established that it was in fact some yacht race markers and the team were stood down.
Whitby Lifeboat Crew said:
"Thank you to the Coastguard for their quick actions and also to the member of the public who made the call, we are glad on this occasion it turned out to be a mistake, but next time it might not - it’s always better to make the call if you’re not sure.
If you see someone in difficulty on on near the water dial 999 and ask for the Coastguard"
Lois Ivan left the town at the end of October for the vessels first scheduled maintenance since entering service in June. A relief lifeboat was on service in the town while the works were carried out at a nearby port.
