Arrest After Whitby Cyclist Injured in Fail to Stop Collision

Police in Whitby have made an arrest following the incident in the early hours of Tuesday.

North Yorkshire Police reported that at around 1.30am in the early hours of Tuesday 28 March, a pedal cyclist was riding along Stakesby Road towards Spring Vale when he was struck by a vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

The 63-year-old man was left lying in the road with serious injuries. He was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to hospital wher he remained on Tuesday.

In an appeal for information on Tuesday morning officers said:

"The vehicle involved, believed to be a Vauxhall, suffered obvious damage, but did not stop at the scene. It is possible that the vehicle may have been abandoned after the collision."

In an update on Tuesday evening North Yorkshire Police said:

"We have now traced and arrested the driver suspected of being involved in this collision.

The 19-year-old woman was arrested earlier today on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop after a collision and failing to report a collision. She remains in police custody at this time.

Thank you to everyone who shared our appeal."

Anyone who witnessed the incident or has private CCTV footage that has captured the car or the collision, is asked to call North Yorkshire Police on 101 and pass information for incident number 12230054894
