Whitby Coastguard Team Complete Stretcher Challenge

A team from Whitby's Coastguard Rescue team completed a fundraising challenge yesterday carrying a 60kg mannequin on a four mile journey.

The team carried their cliff stretcher with training dummy, a combined weight of about 60kg, 3.8miles from Sandsend to St Mary's Church Whitby.

The team said:

"Thank you to our colleagues from our flank team Staithes Coastguard for helping us.

Our friends from Whitby Fire Rescue Service team  joined us on the rope demo/ display at Captain Cooks Monument to demonstrate how different services can work together effectively whenever we need to.

Our route included Church Street and the iconic 199 steps, where our friends from Whitby RNLI lifeboat joined us and finally finishing at St Mary's Church.

All efforts raising funds towards the repairs on the clock at St Mary's Church.

Thank you to everyone who came out to support us!"

St Marys Church Whitby is one of the most iconic historical buildings in Whitby and is still a working church serving the community. In December 2023 the clock faces were removed from the tower and are in need of repairs. To return the clock to its former glory is likely to cost many thousands of pounds, tens of thousands most likely.

There are more details about the team's fundraising efforts on their GoFundMe page.
