A free bus service is going to replace Whitby's Cliff Lift for the summer season.
The lift has been out of action for some time due to mechanical and structural issues.
Borough Council Leader - Steve Siddons - says a fix is being worked on but wont be in place for the summer.
Whitby Cliff Lift was opened in 1931 and it consists of a vertical shaft running down from the cliff top through the boulder clay, leading to a 221ft long pedestrian tunnel out to the beach.
However, it has faced numerous issues and closures over the years.
It's hoped a new ventilation system might finally resolve corrosion issues in the lift shaft.
The borough council say that a free bus service will be introduced for nine weeks over the summer to replace the lift.
Councillor Steve Siddons says it's the only viable solution in the short term.
