As the latest seven day infection numbers show the Scarborough Borough has one of the lowest rates in North Yorkshire, there's a warning that the new strain of the virus has yet to hit.
The latest seven day infection rate numbers for COVID-19 show that the Scarborough Borough now has one of the lowest rates in North Yorkshire at 281 cases for every 100,000 people, but the latest COVID testing data shows that the new more transmissible strain of the virus has yet to have an impact in the borough.
And, while today's numbers show falls in the rate for all seven districts in the county, North Yorkshire as a whole still has some of the highest numbers in the North East of England, the county average is 401.
The numbers of people requiring hospital treatment for COVID has increased significantly in the last week, with a sharp increase in the first couple of days of this week.
The number of people in hospital with COVID in North Yorkshire is now higher than it was at the peak of the first lockdown last year.
Amanda Bloor is from the NHS in North Yorkshire and says the increases are worrying.
Scarborough Hospital has actually seen a decrease in the number of COVID cases it is treating, that number has fallen by five people this week.
However, public health consultant Dr Victoria Turner says the reason for that seems to be that the more transmissible new variant of COVID hasn't arrived in the borough yet in the same way that it has now become prevalent in the rest of the county.
The danger is that when the new variant does become more prevalent in the Scarborough Borough there could be a rapid increase in infections and hospital cases as has been seen elsewhere in the county.
