Warning Over Thefts from Cars in Scarborough

Scarborough police urge residents to lock their cars following a spate of opportunist thefts.

Police in Scarborough are urging residents to remove valuables from their vehicles and lock them when they are not in use.

The warning comes following a spate of thefts in the town from four un-locked cars over one night .

Overnight on 2 to 3 April, opportunist thieves simply opened the doors to the unlocked vehicles and helped themselves to what was inside.

Stolen items include a designer coat, sunglasses, handbag, cash, keys to another car, Argos parcels and children’s toys. In one incident the spare key to the car was found inside the car and the suspect drove off in it. It has since been recovered.

A man and a woman have been arrested in connection with the investigation. They have been released on conditional bail while the investigation continues.

Top tips to keep your car safe

  • Always leave your vehicles locked and alarmed, and if possible, consider fitting an after-market approved immobiliser.
  • Your car, van or motorbike should be parked in a garage or secure area if possible. If not, a well-lit open space is always a good option.
  • Keys should never be left in the ignition, in the same place where the vehicle is kept, or near the front door of your home – thieves know where to look.
  • Be wary of anyone taking an interest in your vehicle, and consider a tracker device and marking system.
  • If you have a quad bike that is not registered for the road, please make a note of the VIN number, so that there is a unique reference to enable the vehicle to be identified if it is recovered.
  • Always remove any valuables such as sat navs or mobile phones, shopping and personal belongings and avoid leaving work tools in your vehicle overnight.
