Unlock Jobs Boost for Scarborough

Bus company East Yorkshire has announced it will be taking on new staff in Scarborough ahead of the anticipated boom in visitors this summer

The company is giving Scarborough residents the chance to train to become bus drivers to help run its network of local and tourist services along the coast, including the popular Coaster service between Bridlington, Filey and Scarborough, and the fun Beachcomber open top buses.

Following the lifting of lockdown restrictions across England, visitors are expected to flock to towns such as Scarborough, Filey and Bridlington, so East Yorkshire is expecting its seaside buses to be in demand this summer.

The company, which already employs over 130 people in Scarborough and Bridlington, will be taking on new drivers to work for the summer season, based at their busy 60-bus strong Scarborough depot.

Successful applicants will undergo an intensive course in bus driving with the company’s award-winning in-house training academy, giving them all the skills they need to drive a bus and provide excellent customer service to passengers.

Ben Gilligan, East Yorkshire’s Area Director, said:

“After a difficult year, we’re looking forward to the relaxation of lockdown rules over the summer, and we’re expecting our Scarborough buses to be very busy as thousands of people who normally travel abroad decide to try a traditional British seaside holiday.”

“To enable us to keep up with demand, we’re looking for friendly, confident people to train to be bus drivers.  You don’t need to have driven a bus before, you just need the right attitude, and we’ll teach you the rest.  Those who previously worked in retail, customer service or hospitality have many of the skills we’re looking for, so it’s an ideal opportunity for those who’ve been made redundant during the pandemic to start a new career.”

Those who think they would make a good bus driver can learn more about the trainee driver scheme on the company’s website, eastyorkshirebuses.co.uk.
