James Hitchcock died on Wednesday following an incident at York Railway station on Sunday.
British Transport Police say that a murder investigation has been launched after the death of a man following an incident at York railway station on 15th December 2024.
They say:
"Officers were called to York railway station at 8.48pm on 15 December following reports of a serious assault. Paramedics and North Yorkshire Police also attended, and a man in his 30s was taken to hospital in a life-threatening condition.
Sadly, the man died in hospital on 18th December with his family by his bedside. "
Mckenzie Dicicco, 22, of Harsley Road, Stockton-on-Tees, has been charged with murder and affray following a serious assault at York railway station on 15 December. He is due to appear at York and Selby on Magistrate Court on Thursday 19th December 2024.
Senior Investigating Officer Detective Chief Inspector Sam Painter said:
“Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones, who are being supported by specialist family liaison officers."
“A man has been charged in connection with this incident and we are not looking for anyone else in connection.”
“We continue to urge witnesses, or anyone with information, who is yet to speak to officers to get in touch by texting 61016, or calling 0800 405040, quoting reference 617 of 15 December. Alternatively, you can contact Crimestoppers anonymously by calling 0800 555 111.”
James Hitchcock played for Barton Town in a post on social media the club said:
"Barton Town FC are devastated to announce that following a serious head injury our First Team goalkeeper James Hitchcock has passed
away peacefully in hospital.Our heartfelt thoughts and prayers go out to his wife, April, their young son., Freddie, his parents, family and friends
All the club's games scheduled for this weekend will be postponed as a mark of respect."
James played for Bridlington Town until this April, the club say:
"It is with disbelief that the club has been made aware of the death of our much loved ex goalkeeper James Hitchcock in tragic circumstances.
The word ‘devastated’ does not explain how we as a club feel at this time.
‘Hitch’ will always be on our minds and in our hearts and our deepest condolences and thoughts and prayers go to April and Freddie and all the family.
Hitch will be remembered before our home game on Boxing Day. RIP Keeps."
