Tony Randerson has been re-elected to the Eastfield division in Scarborough on North Yorkshire Council.
The by-election was called just two days after the formation of the new North Yorkshire Council when Councillor Randerson announced his resignation from the newly-formed authority as well as the Labour Party on April 3, over concerns about the party’s direction and leadership under Sir Keir Starmer.
At the time Mr Randerson said he would contest the election as an independant candidate, the Scarborough and Whitby Conservative Association criticised the by-election as “unnecessary” saying it would cost thousands of pounds to organise.
Five candidates put them selves forward for election with voting taking place yesterday.
Tony Randerson retained the seat taking 499 of the votes.
Richard Flinton, the returning officer for North Yorkshire Council, declared the result yesterday (May 25) at the count in Scarborough.
The total turnout for the by-election was 22.09 per cent, from an electorate of almost 5,000.
