The importance of Lobsters to Bridlington's economy is going to be highlighted in a webinar this week.
The Bridlington Bay Lobster Business Opportunities webinar will take place on Wednesday
Councillor Victoria Aitken is the portfolio holder for economic development at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, she says Lobsters are big business.
Councillor Aitkin says the research which will be discussed at the webinar also shows that lobsters are providing a large number of jobs in the local economy.
The webinar will be delivered by the University of Hull on behalf of East Riding of Yorkshire Council for stakeholders and people interested in the opportunities ahead for the East Yorkshire coast lobster and fishing industry and local businesses.

It will be an opportunity for stakeholders to see what has been happening with the recent lobster study and the future potential business opportunities open to many people in various local industries.
Councillor Victoria Aitken, portfolio holder for economic development and inward investment at East Riding of Yorkshire Council, said:
“As recent as last year, Bridlington Harbour saw around 300 tonnes of lobster land and its first-sale value stand at a staggering £4million. Also, the overall value of the fishing industry to the local economy is estimated at around £20m per year.
“These are eye-opening figures, but still there is little public knowledge of the worth of this industry both regionally and nationally, so this webinar is a fantastic opportunity to learn more and capitalise on our local lobster fishery, which proudly calls itself the biggest in Europe.”
In 2018, a study using funding provided by the Holderness Coast Fisheries Local Action Group (FLAG) was commissioned to look in detail at the local lobster industry and ways in which its economic value should be taken full advantage of.
The University of Hull’s Business School used its finding to demonstrate how that around the world, the promotion of lobster is used to drive local economies, including benefiting tourism and the fishing industry.
This study will therefore act as a backdrop to the findings, illustrating how Bridlington Bay lobster can be used to promote the town as a prominent food tourism destination and whilst doing this, raising awareness of the importance of the fishing industry at a national and international level.
