Spa Orchestra Summer Season To Get Underway on Monday as Planned

The Scarborough Spa Orchestra’s Summer season will go ahead as planned this coming Monday.

Despite the Government’s ruling on social distancing being in place for the first week of their Summer season, The UK’s last remaining professional seaside Orchestra will kick off their 109th year with a morning concert on Monday 12 July 2021 at 11am with a reduced capacity and safety measures in place.

The 10 piece Orchestra will perform 8 concerts per week as part of a ten week season which will run until Thursday 16 September 2021.

Morning concerts will bring a musical start to the day outside in Scarborough Spa’s Suncourt from Sunday to Thursday with evening concerts taking place in The Grand Hall on Monday and Wednesday.

The first Wednesday Gala Night concert of the season on Wednesday 14 July 2021 is entitled ‘Best of British’ and will feature favourites by Elgar (Nimrod and Land of Hope and Glory) and popular light music by Eric Coates and Gilbert & Sullivan. The Welsh, the Scots and the Irish are not forgotten in a programme which also includes a piece by Spa favourite Albert W, Ketelbey.

The Orchestra’s popular Teddy Bears’ Picnics concerts which introduce youngsters to the magic of music and musical instruments also return this Summer at the new time of 2pm on a Sunday afternoon.

This year’s Summer season will see the Orchestra return to action after last year’s concerts were cancelled due to the Coronavirus pandemic-the first time in the 75 years since World War II, the Orchestra was unable to perform a Summer season.

After only performing their New Year’s Day Concert last year, The Orchestra’s Musical Director Paul Laidlaw is looking forward to leading the Orchestra again:

“We are absolutely delighted that we are able to perform again after what has been a very difficult eighteen months for everyone.

Naturally we will be following all the safety guidelines including social distancing so the orchestra may look as though we’re not speaking to each other but, rest assured, we will be playing with even more enthusiasm than ever! I’m so looking forward to welcoming back our amazing, loyal audiences for another summer of fabulous music.”

The Scarborough Spa Box Office will reopen on Sunday (11 July) from 10am-4pm for any in person bookings and Season ticket renewals which are once again are available this year.
