School Governors Decline Invitation to Attend Whitby Town Council Meeting

Whitby Town Councillors call the decision not to attend the council meeting "Disgraceful" and offer another opportunity to meet.

Last night Whitby Town councillors expressed their frustration that the Governors from the Whitby Secondary Partnership had turned down an invitation to attend the full council meeting to discuss the proposal to close Eskdale School.

A public consultation on the proposal is currently underway and two public meetings are being held today as part of that consultation process.

However at a full meeting of Whitby Town Council last night there was frustration from councillors that the governors had declined the invitation to attend last night's meeting to discuss the proposal with town councillors.

Speaking at last night's council meeting, Councillor Sandra Turner expressed her disappointment.

Last night's meeting was attended by pupils and parents from Eskdale School who spoke at the start of the meeting about their concerns.

Councillor Turner says it's "a disgrace" that the Secondary Partnership chose not to take part in the full council meeting to hear those concerns and discuss the issues with councillors.

Town Mayor, Councillor Linda Wild, says the invitation to the Governors to attend the meeting was issued in January. Councillor Wild says she too is disappointed that the Governors chose not to attend last night's meeting and says a further invitation will be issued for them to attend a meeting of the full council.

Councillors at last night's meeting were told the Secondary Partnership had said they would consider meeting with individual councillors as town clerk Michael King explained.

Councillors at last night's meeting indicated that they felt this was not adequate and would write to the governors to invite them to meet with the full council this month.
