Scarborough's "Small School with a Big Heart"

Wednesday, 11 December 2024 06:00

By Anttoni James Numminen, Local Democracy Reporter

An Ofsted inspection has commended staff for their work at the Scarborough Pupil Referral Unit.

Ofsted inspectors have said that the Scarborough Pupil Referral Unit at Valley Bridge Parade is “a small school with a big heart” and said staff worked hard to advocate for pupils.

An inspection carried out last month rated the school as ‘good’ in terms of the quality of education, personal development, and leadership and management whilst being told it ‘requires improvement’ regarding behaviour and attitudes.

Most pupils join the school after a permanent exclusion, or if their mainstream school is unable to meet their needs at a particular point in time, and most pupils have special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND).

A report published by Ofsted said that staff wanted pupils to succeed by returning to mainstream schools or moving on to positive post-16 destinations, and noted that the school was proactive in supporting the identification and assessment of pupils’ SEND.

Inspectors found that pupils who attend the school on short- or long-term placements received the same school experience and that they felt safe and settled and some pupils showed improvements in their attendance from when they joined the school.

However, it was also noted that despite leaders’ work to improve pupils’ attendance, “too many pupils do not attend school regularly”.

The report said that “when pupils do attend school, they behave well” and engage positively with lessons.

It was highlighted that “some pupils are persistently absent and a minority are severely absent” but that the school was working with parents and carers to improve their child’s attendance.

Ofsted found that pupils were “polite and respectful to each other” and were “supported effectively by staff who know each pupil well”.

Educators were also commended for intensifying the approach to developing pupils’ reading, with the school’s reading curriculum “encouraging pupils to think about what they have read while developing phonics knowledge and reading fluency”.

It was also noted that the school’s management committee knew the school well and that the arrangements for safeguarding were effective.

Ofsted recommended that the school “should continue to work innovatively with parents and their children to overcome any barriers to attendance to ensure that more pupils attend school regularly”.

At the time of the inspection, 13 pupils were on the school roll.
