Scarborough's festive activities get underway this evening with the opening of the towns first outdoor real ice rink.
Scarborough's real ice, ice rink will open tonight for the festive period.
It's been built on the North Street car park and will be in place until the new year.
Borough Councillor Jim Grieve is one of those overseeing the project.
He's pleased they decided to go with real ice.
Councillor Jim Grieve says its about locals having fun and about attracting people from further afield to come for a Christmas outing.
The venue will operate from 11am to 8pm Monday to Saturday and from 10am until 7pm each Sunday. Admission is on the hour, every hour, subject to availability. Skaters need to arrive 15 minutes before their booked time to allow for timely access to the ice.
Tickets for a one hour session, which includes time to get skates on and off, will cost £10 for adults and £8 for children aged four years old and above. However the council is offering residents of the borough of Scarborough a 20% discount on the full ticket price on Mondays to Thursdays.
Hire of skates is included in the price. Enthusiasts can bring their own skates if they prefer.
The ice rink has been arranged by Scarborough Borough Council, sponsored by Blue Raptor Signs and supported by Yorkshire Coast BID.
The Borough Council say there’s no need to have previous experience on the ice as all ages and abilities are welcome. The rink will feature dedicated facilities for visitors with mobility issues, including wheelchair users. There will also be fun skate aids in the shape of a penguin for younger skaters to perfect their skills, children need to be aged 4 or over to go on the ice.
For those seeking a peaceful and relaxing skating experience, low-sensory sessions will be held on Sundays at 10am, Tuesdays at 11am and Thursdays at 2pm. Music will be turned down and flashing lights switched off during these sessions.
Penguin skating aids for children are available to hire at the time of booking.
Councillor Grieve says it's important to pre-book your time on the ice as no payments can be made at the ice rink itself.
