Scarborough's Central Tramway Cycle 200km for Scarborough RNLI

Central Tramway in Scarborough set themselves a challenge during the last two weeks of the summer holiday 2024 to cycle 200 kilometres to celebrate the RNLI's 200th anniversary.

The general manager, Colin Powel completed the challenge on a cycling machine at one of the tramway entrances and placed several donation buckets around their premises, raising £925.24 for the charity.

Built in 1881, the Central Tramway Company Scarborough Limited is a Victorian cliff railway on the Yorkshire coast.

One of the oldest cliff railways still running in the UK, the Central Tramway has the distinction of being the oldest cliff tramway company in the country as the original corporation still operates the business today.

John Porter, RNLI Visits Officer said:

'We are incredibly grateful to Central Tramway Scarborough undertaking this challenge and raising these vital funds to carry on saving lives at sea.

‘Examples of how this money could be used include purchasing or going towards purchasing any of the following:

Drysuit for an ILB crew member (£805),
Helmet (£350),
Seagoing gloves (£25).
Thermal suit for an ILB crew member (£150),
Helly Hansen layered clothing and boots for an ALB crew member (£1600),
Lifejacket (£590),

'Congratulations and well done on completing the 200 Km cycle challenge and thank you to everyone who supported Colin and the staff at Central Tramway through their generous donations.’
