Scarborough UTC Team Crowned Final F1 in Schools UK National Champions

Unity Racing, a team representing Scarborough UTC, has achieved remarkable success by becoming the final ever F1 in Schools UK national champions.

The team, led by team principal Jack Metcalfe, secured the prestigious title at the national finals this week.

The competition involves teams designing and racing 1/20th scale Formula 1 cars on a 20-metre track, with the cars completing the distance in approximately one second. However, the competition extends beyond just the racing. Teams are also evaluated on design and enterprise portfolios, pit displays, and verbal presentations, all judged by industry experts from universities and Formula 1.

Reflecting on the win, Jack Metcalfe stated,

"So yesterday we were crowned the final F1 schools world champions ever. So it's getting re-branded to STEM racing next year. So we will be the ever defending champions of F1 in schools".

He added that the team had "the fastest car at the competition" and was recognised for having the "best engineering portfolio" and the "best verbal presentation". In fact, Unity Racing "on average...scored highest in every single aspect," which ultimately led to their victory.

Jack spoke to Paddy when they got back to Scarborough on Friday.

The national finals featured six teams that had progressed from regional finals involving around 20 teams each. Unity Racing overcame strong competition, with Toro from St. Olives's Grammar School finishing in second place.

This achievement marks a significant milestone for the team members. Jack Metcalfe explained,

"Well, it's really going to be a life changer for all of us because we've got scholarships for Aston University now to go and do mechanical engineering. So that's fully funded for these bursaries".

Furthermore, their victory has earned them the opportunity to compete at the world finals in Singapore in October. "So, we're all very very excited and, you know, raring to go," said Jack Metcalfe.

The win for Unity Racing is a proud moment, with Jack Metcalfe noting that they are "flying the flag for Scarborough on the global stage".
