BMX, Boxing, Surfing and Skateboarding will all be on show in Scarborough on Saturday as the town hosts it's first ever "Extreme" festival.
Scarborough Extreme, a free event showcasing a variety of extreme sports and activities, will take place across Scarborough on October 5th, 2024. Organised by North Yorkshire Council as part of the Scarborough Fair, the event is set to be a thrilling day out for all ages, featuring surfing, skateboarding, cycling, music, and workshops.
It's part of the Scarborough Fair programme and festival director - Julian Caddy - says it's a unique event.
One of the event's main attractions is the participation of Scarborough-born BMX star, Miller Temple. Currently part of the Great Britain Cycling Team podium potential programme, Temple will be demonstrating his freestyle BMX skills at the William Street car park as part of Team Extreme.
Temple, who has recently returned from competing in Barcelona, expressed his pride in showcasing his talent in his hometown. He praised the high standard of BMX riding in the UK, attributing it to excellent facilities and coaching.
“I was born in Scarborough and though I have moved away in order to train, I am proud of where I am from and when I come back to see family I still ride down on the seafront with friends.“I am looking forward to Scarborough Extreme and being able to show people what I am capable of.”
North Yorkshire Council's executive member for open to business, Cllr Mark Crane, whose responsibilities include the visitor economy, said:
“This event is crammed with people who are all dedicated to their own pursuits in and around the Scarborough area.
“We have had a year packed with events that have really put Scarborough on the map, and this is no exception. Whether it’s cycling, surfing, skateboarding, music, there is truly something for everyone and I would encourage everyone to come down and take part.”
North Yorkshire Council’s member for Falsgrave and Stepney, Cllr Liz Colling, who sits on the Scarborough Town Board, said:
“Scarborough Extreme is the latest exciting event to come to the town. Experiences such as this help support local businesses and organisations and provide entertainment for both residents and visitors.”
Scarborough Extreme aims to provide a platform for both beginners and experienced individuals to engage with various sports and activities. Julian Caddy, the festival director of Scarborough Fair, expressed his enthusiasm for the event, highlighting the unique opportunity it presents for people of all ages and abilities to come together and celebrate a shared passion for adventure and skill.
