Scarborough Swimming Pool to be Demolished

The old indoor pool will be replaced with a grassed area which local councillors want fenced off to prevent vehicle access.

Scarborough's old indoor swimming pool at Ryndale Crescent is set to be demolished.

Town planners backed a request for prior approval to demolish the building yesterday.

There are no plans as to what will go in it's place and in the interim it will be replaced with a grassed area.

Councillor John Casey thinks that has the potential to cause some problems.

The building on Ryndle Crescent opened in 1973 and closed as a pool when the new sports village opened.

The report presented to councillors on the plannign committee yesterday said the building has fallen in to a state of disrepair.

"The need for the facilities within the building ceased when the Sports Village was
opened at Ashburn Road, incorporating new indoor swimming pools. The building to be
demolished was opened in 1973 and its design is characteristic of that era. It is not
considered to be of sufficient architectural or townscape merit to object to its loss and
has now acquired a rather unkempt appearance since it fell into disuse. Its replacement
with grassed land is considered to be appropriate since it would appear as a
continuation of the open space which partially surrounds the building and on the
opposite side of Ryndle Crescent."

Ward Councillor Phil Kershaw has welcomed the decision to demolish the building but wants the grassed area to have a strong, low level fence to enable public access to the site while preventing vehicles from getting on the grass.

The report presented to councillors outlined the demolition process itself :

The works will involve the prior removal of all asbestos containing materials in a safe and controlled manner by a specialist company.

The next stage is the mechanical demolition of the existing building, foundations and pool structure, with all demolition waste and debris being removed from site by a specialist demolition company. The site would be fenced off and safety measures for demolition operatives
are outlined.

It is understood that adjacent ornamental trees would be retained, while the site is separated from more mature trees situated on the slopes down to Burniston Road.

Councillors were told that no objections to the demolition had been received during a consultation period.
