Scarborough Swimmers Press for Community Access to Alpamare Waterpark

The Alpamare Community Action Group says it hopes to work with new operator, Flamingo Land, to ensure local people can access the water park.

A group of Scarborough Swimmers says they feel positive about the future of the Alpamare Water park.

The Alpamare Community Action Group has been campaigning to make sure local people are considered in the future plans for the attraction.

Sarah Forsyth from the group says while they are disappointed that the council wont be running the water park itself, they are encouraged by early communication they've had with new operator Flamingo Land.

The Community Action Group says it is deeply disappointed with North Yorkshire Council's decision to focus on using the site primarily as a tourist attraction rather than a community resource.

Sarah Forsyth from the group says they would like to see concessions made for local users of the pools.

The swimming group says it had meetings with the council over the last few months as the future of the water park was being discussed. Sarah Forsyth says they pressed the authority to take on the running of the facility itself to ensure a focus on community access.

Sarah feels that the water park should be accessible to local residents as well as visitors.

Sarah says there were a number of community groups that used Alpamare for swimming classes before it closed last autumn, she feels there is scope for the pools to be used by a wider range of local groups.

The group are now hoping to meet with Flamingo Land to discuss community access to the water park, Sarah thinks there is great potential for the site.

North Yorkshire Council announced last week that it had agreed a 12 month deal with Flamingo Land to run the water park. The site had been closed since last year when the previous operator entered administration, a process which left the council as the owner of the facility.

Speaking last week North Yorkshire Council's deputy leader - Councillor Gareth Dadd - told This is the Coast that the council didn't feel it had the expertise necessary to run Alpamare itself.

Flamingo Land boss - Gordon Gibb - has indicated that he intends for the reopened water park to appeal to local people. Speaking last week he  said he's aware of the criticism that under it's previous operator the water park was too expensive for local residents to use regularly.
