Scarborough College could be involved in helping to preserve some of the listed buildings at the former Filey Road Sports centre in Scarborough.
The borough council is looking to sell the site, some of it would be come housing but there would also be tennis courts on part of the site and Scarborough College could take over some of the buildings.
Chris Bourne is the Borough Council's head of projects, he says the college could take over a couple of the buildings.
The Borough's Mayor has welcomed the proposal for the site which was presented to the council's Lives and Homes committee.
The proposal includes plans to brign the former pavillion and sports hall back into use. The report highlighted the historical significance of the buildings saying:
"The Grade II listed Tennis Club House was completed in 1912 and designed by Scarborough born Sir Edwin Cooper. This Arts and Crafts Influenced building is largely intact from its original design and features.
The Club House hosted a range of significant tennis events in its time, with many internationally known tennis players including Fred Perry and Ken Rosewall having played here. As a building associated with lawn tennis and of architectural merit, it is nationally rare. The turret was added later to the centre of the Club House from which all the grass courts
could be viewed. The Club House and its grounds was taken over by Scarborough Borough Council in 1935, and the modern sports hall extension was subsequently added.
Councillor Eric Broadbent voiced his support for the inclusion of tennis courts in the plan and the involvement of the college.
The Borough Council is looking at selling the site, part of which would be used for around 24 new homes.
In principle approval of the plans will proceed to the authority’s cabinet, which is next set to meet on Tuesday, December 13. However, officers predicted that the plans would not be finalised before next year’s local government reorganisation.
