Scarborough Skipper Guy Waites has been tackling bad weather in the first week of his attempt to win the Golden Globe round the world Yacht Race.
Guy is sailing solo in his boat the Sagarmatha, with no modern navigation kit.
Guy says the conditions have been challenging for both sailing and navigation.
Guy is one of 16 competitors taking part in the race.
They set off from France just over a week ago and although we can see their progress on a live web map, Guy himself has no idea where the other boats are.
The current data suggests Guy is currently in 8th place.
It is a transitional season in the Bay of Biscay and the route towards Lanzarote is uncertain as the fleet has been hit with several low pressure systems moving towards Europe.
This means strong headwinds and heavy seas for the entrants.
Guy says the weather conditions have been tough over the last week and not what was expected for the time of year.
It's not just the weather which has meant Guy's first week hasn't been plain sailing. Guy says he's also had a couple of technical issues with the boat.
Other competitors have also been experiencing a range of issues in the first week of sailing, Guy deBoer (USA) was seasick and gashed his leg but is now said to be "trucking along". Ertan Beskardes (UK) was hit by a wave ondeck, fell into his cockpit and was knocked unconscious, hurting his arm. Contact was made with the events 24hr telemedicine doctors he has since sent an encouraging message “all good on board, just slow progress, weather good, food super”.
