In 2020 Scarborough Sixth Form College became one of the first providers across the country to offer the brand-new T Level in Education and Childcare and two years on, they are celebrating the first cohort of students to complete their course.
T Levels are 16 to 19 qualifications, broadly equivalent in size to 3 A levels, that focus on technical and vocational skills. They can help students into skilled employment, higher education or apprenticeships. They are now available to study in a wide range of subjects, with Scarborough Sixth Form College offering courses in Education and Childcare (Early Years Education and Assisting Teaching).
These new qualifications have been designed in collaboration with employers to provide the skills that businesses across the region need. T Levels are unique as they combine classroom study with significant industry placements so young people gain valuable work experience in their chosen sector. Many local businesses along the Yorkshire Coast are embracing T Levels as a great way to bring in new ideas and the latest skills, and a new way to find, nurture and secure young talent for their workforce.
Shauna George is one of the first ever students to complete the T Level in Education and Childcare. Shauna completed her placement at Buckets and Spades Day Nursery in Scarborough. After graduating Shauna is planning to progress to university to study primary teaching.
Shauna said,
“I am proud to say that I was one of the first students to complete the T Level in Education and Childcare and it has opened up so many opportunities for the future such as university and employment. My placement at Buckets and Spades Day Nursery has been a highlight of my course as I enjoyed putting into practice what I had learnt in the classroom.
The placement has given me an insight into what it is like working with children as well as the challenges faced as a practitioner. The T Level course is perfect for those students who enjoy a mix of first-hand experiences and learning in a classroom.
My next steps are to study primary education at the University of Hull as the T Level has ignited my desire to learn more about supporting children with their learning in more depth.
I have really enjoyed my two years studying the T Level in Education and Childcare and would recommend it to anyone wishing to work with children and young people in a range of job roles in education, health and care.”
Tracey Herridge, teacher of the T Level in Education and Childcare said,
“We’re incredibly proud to be celebrating the success of our first ever cohort of T Level students this summer. We were among the first providers in the country, and the first on the Yorkshire Coast, to offer these brilliant new qualifications and it has been fantastic to see how they have been embraced by young people.
I’m excited to see our students build on their success as they prepare for their next step, all of whom have positive destinations either onto higher education or directly into the workplace.”
