Guy Waites has been battling 10m high waves in the Southern Ocean and conditions aren't expected to improve for another 18 hours.
The Scarborough sailor Guy Waites, who's been competing in the Golden Globe Round The World Yacht Race, has been battling monster seas for the last few days.
This morning, the Golden Globe Race has posted an update on social media saying he has suffered a heavy knockdown. A knockdown is when the boat is turned on its side at least 90 degrees with the mast touching the water.
In the knockdown, Guy has lost his four-person liferaft, along with his PLB (Personal Locator Beacon).
Guy is currently 640 miles from Tasmania and experiencing 12 meter waves which are expected to continue for another 12 hours.
Don McIntyre is from the Golden Globe Race control centre who are monitoring the situation.
Guy started his solo round the world voyage in September as part of the Golden Globe yacht race. After suffering from an infestation of barnacles, which slowed his progress, Guy put into port in Cape Town (South Africa) in December to remove the barnacles. That port call saw him moved from the main race to what's called "The Chichester Class", but the delay also meant that Guy missed getting to Hobart (Tasmania) before the January 31st cut off date. That lead to him be removed from teh event this week with his own team taking over responsability for his ongoing welfare.
However the Golden Globe Race Team are currently still tracking his position and have communications with Guy.
Don McIntyre says they are continuing to provide every assistance they can.
Don says the storm conditions are severe but that guy has experience of sailing in rough seas.
Here is Don's daily tracker update video from the The Golden Globe Race which shows the extent of the storm Guy is sailing in.
