Scarborough Sailor Heads for Port After Southern Ocean Storm

After being hit by 12 metre waves last week, Scarborough Sailor Guy Waites is now heading for port in Tasmania according to his wife Julie.

The round the world skipper lost his life-raft and distress beacon during last week's storm.

His wife Julie is now running Guy's support team from North Yorkshire.

Speaking on Paddy at Breakfast, Julie said they have had some communication from Guy

Julie says that while Guy is now out of the Golden Globe Race after missing the January 31st deadline to get to Hobart, his circumnavigation of the globe may well continue.

Last Thursday Guy suffered a "Knock Down" in the southern oceans as his vessel Sagarmatha was hit by the massive waves and strong winds.

Julie says she heard about the situation in an early morning phone call.

Julie says that while she is used to Guy being in some tough conditions the situation last week was worrying.

Guy has now been at sea since September when he set off from France as part of the Golden Globe Round the World Yacht Race fleet. With the exception of a few days in December, when Guy put in to port in Cape Town to get barnacles removed from the hull, Julie says regular communication has been sparse.

With Guy missing the January 31st deadline to reach Hobart he will now be retired from the Golden Globe Race, if he decides to continue on his round the world voyage then responsibility for his safety and communications will pass from the race organisers to Guy's own support team lead by Julie.

Julie says the solo round the world voyage has been a big dream of Guy's for a number of years, she says she is immensely proud of what he has achieved.

Late yesterday Guy checked in with the Golden Globe Race control centre and spoke for the first time about the knockdown event last week and the severity of the storm.
