His boat 'Sagamartha' arrived into Les Sables-d'Ollone in France this morning, 277 days after he embarked on the Golden Globe Race challenge.
The race, sailing around the world solo and non stop, without modern navigation equipment, ended for Guy after he failed to make the Hobart Gate on time. But he continued on, with the aim of accomplashing a rare solo-circumnavigation of the world.
Speaking to Golden Globe Race Founder & Chairman Don McIntyre this morning, Guy said it was great to be finally back:
His first major issue was Barnacles attaching themselves to the hull of his boat in the Atlantic Ocean. He was forced to make a stop in Cape Town, South Africa to have them removed.
The stop meant he would be unable to compete for trophies in the Golden Globe Race and was moved into 'Chichester Class'.
He then needed to make a second stop after a huge wave ripped his liferaft off the boat:
But he continued on to complete a solo non-stop circumnavigation of the globe.
He told Don about some of the other issues he's faced:
Guy has had to ration his food and drink in the final weeks of his voyage and ran out of food with 2 days remaining. He's done various challenges before, including sailing across the Atlantic solo 5 times. But the Golden Globe Race challenge was another level up:
The Scarborough Yacht Club member celebrated arriving with Champagne and a crossiant.
Congratulations Guy!
