Scarborough Lights Festival Concludes with Spectacular Fire Garden Event

The Scarborough Lights Festival is coming to a close, with the final event being a five-night spectacle in the South Cliff Gardens.

The event, titled the South Cliff Fire Garden, is set to run from December 18th to 22nd, and will feature a breathtaking display of 250 Roman candles.

The festival, now in its second year, has attracted thousands of visitors to the seaside town, aiming to boost tourism during a typically quieter period. The festival was established with the aim of fostering civic pride and showcasing Scarborough’s vibrant artistic culture.

The Fire Garden is being produced by the same team behind the acclaimed fire gardens at Blenheim Palace, Kew Gardens, and Hampton Court, one of the producers is Scarborough resident Demelza Triffitt:

In addition to the mesmerising candle display, attendees can look forward to:

  • A series of captivating light installations
  • A walk-through kaleidoscope light experience
  • A festive Christmas tree light display
  • A heart arch framing the scenic South Bay, offering perfect photo opportunities
  • A fire performance by the talented Ed Grimoldby
  • Delicious food and drink options from Embers and Geos

The event is not just about the fire garden itself. It encompasses a broader experience with an audio track to set the mood as visitors wander through the illuminated hedges and enjoy the various installations.

Festival Director - Julian Caddy - thinks the event will be a fitting climax to the Scarborough Lights Festival:

Demelza Triffitt, a local resident and producer for Culture Creative, the company behind the Fire Garden, expressed her delight at bringing such a spectacle to her home town. She says the space lends itself well to becoming a Fire Garden.

Julian Caddy, the festival director, also emphasised the uniqueness of using the Rose Garden for such an event and expressed his surprise that the space hasn't been utilized more often. He also highlighted the event's popularity, with over 3,000 tickets sold.

The event runs from tonight (December 18th) until December 22nd, tickets need to purchased in advance at https://scarboroughfair.uk/events/south-cliff-fire-garden/

Other elements of Scarborough lights also continue until the 22nd with the Ships Ahoy! event bringing stunning illuminations on display on vessels in the harbour, while Scarborough Art Gallery will be open until 6.30pm each day for the Stories Under the Stars installation exploring the town’s past and present.

The Scarborough Live Advent Calendar also continues, with residents, community groups, local schoolchildren and businesses helping to decorate windows in 24 locations, with a festive creation unveiled on each day of December.

Among the first windows to be showcased was at The Bike and Boot Hotel on Cliff Bridge Terrace, after its managers partnered with youth homelessness charity SASH which supports young people throughout North Yorkshire.

They designed an eye-catching display with one side of a Christmas tree brightly decorated and the other with no decorations or lights at all, contrasting how the festive season can be a difficult time for young people facing homelessness.

The fundraising officer at SASH, Aimee Harding, said:

“We work with lots of young people in the Scarborough area and it means so much to everyone at SASH to be working with The Bike and Boot to showcase what Christmas can look like for young people who need SASH.

“We’ve had some amazing feedback already, and it’s been great to see so many people stopping to think about how that must feel and what they could do to support SASH and help young people in the area.”
