Scarborough Borough COVID Rate Back Below English Average

Thursday, 29 April 2021 09:33

By Carl Gavaghan, Local Democracy Reporter

Scarborough’s Covid-19 infection rate is continuing to fall.

The borough’s seven-day coronavirus infection rate per 100,000 people is now at 23, down four on Monday and two on yesterday.

The borough is now averaging 25 new cases every week.

It means that the borough’s rate has fallen back below the national average of 24.

The average infection rate for North Yorkshire stands at 31, in part due to the high rate in the Selby district, which remains above 100.

In an email to residents North Yorkshire County Council’s chief executive, Richard Flinton, warned the spikes like those being seen in Selby can come at any time.

He said:

“For North Yorkshire, the last week has seen our Covid-19 infection rate per 100,000 population move rapidly from below the England average to above and the rate for Selby district more than double, moving from 46.3 to 109.2 currently – placing it at the top of the national league.

“This shows very clearly how one outbreak can create significant turbulence and concern.

“So although overall the situation is encouraging in that many of our districts show rates well below the national average, it is also volatile.”

Mobile testing facilities will be available in Whitby, Scarborough and Filey this weekend for anyone with symptoms to get tested.

William Street Coach Park in Scarborough is also still offering testing seven days a week from 8am until 8pm.
