Scarborough's ambitious boat lift project has received a significant funding boost, with the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority awarding £700,000 towards its construction.
The funding, part of the Mayoral Investment Fund, was formally accepted by North Yorkshire Council at an Executive meeting on December 17th, 2024.
The boat lift is seen as a key element in the regeneration of Scarborough Harbour and is expected to provide a major boost to the local economy.
While the YNYCA grant is substantial, additional funding is still required to fully realise the project. Chris Bourne is the council's head of harbours, he says securing the remaining funds is a priority.
The current funding plan for the Scarborough Boat Lift comprises:
- £700,000 from the YNYCA Mayoral Investment Fund
- £500,000 from the UK Seafood Fund (application pending)
- £553,000 or more from North Yorkshire Council's capital budget (dependent on securing the full grant amount from the UK Seafood Fund)
Scarborough Councillor, Heather Philips, says the money is good news for the town.
The Combine Authority also awarded funding to several other projects across North Yorkshire, including:
- Selby Station Gateway improvements (£700,000)
- Works accompanying the Harrogate Station Gateway project (£500,000)
- Electric vehicle charging points in various locations (£175,000)
The funding for these projects comes from the initial £9 million gainshare allocated to the newly formed Mayoral Authority as part of the devolution deal.
