Alison Hume says that 27,196 new urgent dental appointments will be offered in North Yorkshire as part of the Labour government's Plan for Change to improve NHS dentistry.
The MP says that the Labour government "is delivering" on its Plan for Change to make NHS dentistry fit for the future. While noting it will take time to resolve the dental crisis in Scarborough and Whitby.
The Government says it is acting to make NHS dental sector fit for the future, after years of neglect and unsuccessful interventions, and is delivering on its manifesto commitment to roll out extra urgent appointments across the country. The government says it plans to target 'dental deserts' where people struggle to get appointments.
Alison Hume says she has contacted the Humber and North Yorkshire Health and Care Partnership to determine how many of these appointments will be specifically available in Scarborough and Whitby and says:
For now they have told me the following:
“We are beginning to assess the extra capacity needed, and will then identify suitable locations for service delivery, and proceed with commissioning this activity.
Our advice for patients with urgent dental issues is to call NHS 111.
They will be offered an appointment if it is deemed clinically appropriate following a telephone triage. An urgent dental need may include symptoms such as severe tooth pain. Those with heavy bleeding, or swelling of the mouth, throat, neck or eye may be classed as an 'emergency' and may be directed to A&E for further assessment following telephone triage with NHS 111.
Patients with urgent needs and delayed treatments will be seen first, with routine and non-urgent dental care then provided on a prioritised basis.Urgent appointments are available across most areas within Humber and North Yorkshire, but patients may need to travel in order to access an appointment.”
According to GOV.UK, each Integrated Care Board (ICB) has a target of urgent appointments to roll out, based on estimated local levels of unmet need for urgent NHS care. These extra appointments will be for patients who are likely to be in pain and require urgent treatment and will start coming online from April. Patients will be able to access these appointments by contacting their usual dental practice or calling NHS 111 if they do not have a regular dentist or need help out of hours.
