Scarborough and Whitby MP Backs Elected Mayor Plan

Scarborough and Whitby MP - Sir Robert Goodwill - is backing the plans for an elected Mayor for York and North Yorkshire.

The mayor would get some powers and funding devolved from central government.

Sir Robert says the new role will be created as a further step in the local government reorganisation which will see the borough and county councils abolished in April.

There is a little over three months until major changes are made to local government in North Yorkshire.

The Borough and County Council's will be abolished and replaced with a single unitary authority for the whole county.

In parts of Scarborough that will mean there will be no lower tier council as the town is one of just two areas in the county not to have a town or parish council.

A public consultation completed last week has recommended that a new Town Council should be created for Scarborough, with 69.9% of respondents backing the plan.

Sir Robert says he thinks a town council should be created for Scarborough.
