A music video featuring workers in Yorkshire Coast Care homes is to be shown in Westminster today as part of national day of action by the care sector.
The song released by the social care provider organisation The Independent Care Group (iCG) is to feature at national day of action by the sector.
A coalition of social care representatives, will call on the Government to review the impact that the proposed increase in National Insurance and a rise in the National Living Wage, will have on social care providers.
Brian Johnson wrote the song "Who Cares" to draw attention to the issues, he says the music video was filmed in Yorkshire Coast Care homes.
The song was co-written by iCG Marketing Executive Brian Johnson and performed by co-writer, Ivor Novello-nominated singer-songwriter Boo Hewerdine. Proceeds from its sale go to The Care Workers’ Charity.
ICG Chair, Mike Padgham said:
“We are passionate about supporting the day of action and thrilled that ‘Who Cares?’ is going to be a part of the proceedings.
“The song highlights the vital role social care plays in looking after the oldest and most vulnerable sections of our society.
“We very much hope that having it performed during the day of action will help us all to get across how important social care is and how vital it is that the sector gets the support and reform that it deserves.”
He said the day of action was evidence of the strength of feeling in the sector.
“Social care has been neglected for three decades or more and providers feel that enough is enough – we have to take a stand, for all those people who need and rely upon care to enjoy a good quality of life,” he added.
“Some 2m people cannot get the care they need and they deserve better. On the 25th February we will speak for them and for everyone who believes social care needs reform.”
Organisers say that the day of action is a "demonstration of the level of concern social care providers have over the impact budget measures will have on the delivery of care". They say that without Government help, the combined impact of increases in the Employer’s National Insurance Contributions and the National Living Wage could be devastating on a sector that is already on its knees. They fear provider closures and more people going without care.
Campaigners want the Government to review the budget measures, make social care providers exempt from the rise in National Insurance or to put more funding into the sector to help them cope with rising costs.
The song’s accompanying video was directed and edited by Brian and shot by Silsden-based film-maker Dawn Feather.
The pair filmed sequences with staff and residents in care and nursing homes belonging to Mr Padgham’s Saint Cecilia’s Care Group and with ubu in Harrogate, who support vulnerable adults to live independently in their communities.
Brian says filming the video in Scarborough and Pickering captured some touching moments.
