Residents from care homes in Scarborough and Pickering are featured in a new music video for a song that aims to raise awareness of the challenges facing the care sector and raise funds for charity.
The song, titled "Who Cares?", was released by the Independent Care Group (iCG) and features footage filmed at care homes belonging to the Saint Cecilia's Care Group, it's performed by Ivor Novello-nominated singer-songwriter Boo Hewerdine.
Brian Johnson, Marketing Executive at iCG, wrote the lyrics, he says the song has a number of aims.
The video was shot by filmmaker Dawn Feather, who "kindly broke off" from working on a documentary to help with the project.
Brian directed and edited the video. He said that Dawn was "really good with people" and was able to put residents at ease during filming, which allowed them to "capture really special 'day in the life' moments and interactions between carers and their clients".
Brian said,
"We were so privileged to be able to get access to their lives for a few hours and share the positive aspects of the care world and I think the images shot really support the song's tone".
The video also includes footage from ubu in Harrogate, which helps vulnerable adults live independently in their communities.
The project is part of a long-term campaign by the iCG to promote and highlight social care and advocate for improvements in the sector. Proceeds from the sale of the song will be donated to The Care Workers' Charity.
Johnson co-wrote the song with Ivor Novello-nominated singer-songwriter Boo Hewerdine who has had songs recorded by kd lang, The Corrs and Eddi Reader.

The lyrics were inspired by Johnson's experiences working in the care sector. He said he wanted the song to come "from a few different angles", with lyrics about "the person being cared for", "the carers", and "the powers that be who should be doing a little bit more for our sector".
Speaking about the goals of the project, Brian said they wanted to shed some positivity and help raise some funds for the Care Workers Charity.
The video captures the "real life" of care homes and presents them "in a very positive way", according to Johnson. He said,
"I realize it's sometimes care homes are portrayed in a sort of negative fashion in the press...but it on a day-to-day basis they're really positive and really nice places and the people who work there are just wonderful".
The song, distributed by Horus Music, is available to purchase as a digital download at: https://thecareworkerscharity.bandcamp.com/track/who-cares and features the vocals of "Sing Out! South Craven"
