Scarborough Advent Adventure Begins

Scarborough starts a unique festive celebration with its Live Advent Calendar event kicking off on Sunday.

As part of the Scarborough Lights Festival, this community-driven initiative sees different windows across the town lit up each day of Advent, creating a festive trail for residents and visitors to enjoy.

Kayleigh Catford is project manager for the Live Advent Calendar:

With a diverse range of participants, from residential homes and businesses to community groups and even an entire street, the Live Advent Calendar promises a vibrant and engaging experience.

Window displays will range from intimate scenes in homes to large-scale installations, reflecting the creativity and effort of the participants.

Kayleigh explains more about what you'll see throughout December in Scarborough:

Kayleigh reveals that many have meticulously planned their designs, researching materials and lighting techniques to bring their visions to life. The displays promise a heartwarming mix of personal tributes, traditional nativity scenes, and celebrations of local charities and their milestones.

Finding the Advent windows is part of the fun. While a complete trail map will be available on the Scarborough Fair website, locations will be revealed daily, encouraging residents to discover the festive displays in their own neighbourhoods. Kayleigh emphasizes the hope that people will spread their exploration throughout the month, enjoying a few windows every few days. Social media updates will also provide sneak peeks and announce upcoming locations, adding an element of anticipation to the event.

One of the most heartwarming aspects of the Live Advent Calendar is the significant community involvement. With three schools participating, over 700 people have contributed to the project, including pupils who have each created an element for their school's display. This collective effort fosters a sense of ownership and pride, allowing children to share their creativity with their families and the wider community.

The event has seen a surge in interest since its debut last year, with even more participants signing up for this year's edition. Kayleigh attributes this growth to the positive experiences of those who took part last year and the desire to be a part of this special community initiative. This year, the Live Advent Calendar has even expanded to include 25 windows, exceeding the traditional 24 days of Advent, due to the overwhelming enthusiasm from residents.

The long-term vision for the Live Advent Calendar is for it to become a self-sustaining tradition, carried on by the community even after the Scarborough Lights Festival program concludes next year. This aspiration echoes the enduring appeal of community-driven festive initiatives, like the resident in Eastfield who decorated his entire house with Christmas lights, creating a beloved local spectacle

.

Looking ahead, there are even plans to extend the Live Advent Calendar beyond Scarborough, connecting with nearby Filey and potentially expanding along the coast.
