Saint Catherine's Launch Veterans Recruitment Drive

Scarborough's Saint Catherine’s Hospice has launched a new "Volunteer to Career" programme in partnership with a national charity, Helpforce.

The project aims to support veterans and their family members in transitioning to healthcare roles.

The "Volunteer to Career for the Armed Forces Community" programme offers pathways into clinical, non-clinical, and support positions within healthcare. Participants can gain practical experience in various departments:

  • Business Support: Developing skills in HR, finance, fundraising, and communications and marketing.
  • Hospitality: Gaining hands-on experience in restaurant settings, covering front-of-house service, stock control, kitchen operations, and logistics.
  • Healthcare Assistant: Working alongside nurses and multidisciplinary teams to support patient care.

Helpforce’s "Volunteer to Career" Programme boasts high success rates, with over 70% of participants securing employment or pursuing further education. A reported 52% of participants gain career clarity after volunteering. Additionally, 88% of healthcare staff believe that volunteers improve service quality.

Saint Catherine’s is the first hospice in the UK to achieve both Bronze and Silver awards for being Veteran Aware. Lizzie Cyrus, People Services Co-ordinator at Saint Catherine’s, said, 

"We are proud to launch this programme as it aligns with the great work and commitment we already provide to support veterans at the hospice…we hope this project will provide meaningful pathways into healthcare careers for veterans and their families".
