Remembrance Day Events on the Yorkshire Coast

Towns along the Yorkshire Coast are preparing to honour those who served their country with a series of Remembrance Day events.

Scarborough will be marking Remembrance Sunday, November 10th, with two events.

  • The first will take place at Oliver’s Mount from 10:30 am to 11:15 am and will feature a parade of Standards, laying of wreaths, prayers, and Acts of Remembrance.

  • The second event, “Laying Poppies on the Sea,” will begin at Queen St Methodist Church at 9:30 am with a service that includes a Drum Head Ceremony, blessing of wreaths, and poppy drop. A parade, led by the Scarborough Sea Cadet Band, will then depart from Queen Street and proceed through Newborough and Eastborough to the Lifeboat House. At 10:40 am, concluding Acts of Remembrance and the laying of poppies on the sea will take place at the Lifeboat Station, with the RNLI crew paying their respects.

On Armistice Day, November 11th, a short Act of Remembrance will be held in the Garden of Remembrance, Alma Square, from 10:50 am to 11:15 am.

Whitby’s Remembrance Day service will take place on Sunday, November 10th at Dock End.

  • At 10:45 am, a parade will commence, featuring the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME), veterans, and Air Cadets.

  • The service will include readings by the CO of RAF Fylingdales and a member of the RNLI. The readings “In Flanders Field” and “They shall not grow old as we grow old age shall not weary them nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning we will remember them” will also feature in the service.

  • At 10:59 am, the Last Post will play, followed by a two-minute silence at 11:00 am.

  • Reveille will then sound at 11:02 am, followed by a reading by the Whitby branch Royal British Legion chairman.

  • The service will conclude with the formal laying of wreaths, accompanied by music from the Lone Piper, and the playing of the National Anthem.

The Royal British Legion in Filey has organised two remembrance events.

  • On Remembrance Sunday, a service will be held at St. Oswald’s Church at 9:30 am. At 10:35 am, a parade will depart from the church and proceed to the Memorial Gardens. The parade will include the Sea Cadets, Brownies, Rainbows, the Filey Branch of the Royal British Legion, and members of the congregation. A short service will then be held at the Memorial Gardens at approximately 10:50 am, followed by a two-minute silence and the laying of wreaths. Attendees should note that rolling road closures will be in place from 10:30 am to 11:30 am along the parade route and in Murray Street.

  • On Armistice Day, a short ceremony will be held at the Filey Memorial gardens at 10:45 am. The ceremony will include a short Service of Remembrance led by the Vicar and a two-minute silence.

Bridlington’s annual Remembrance Service will take place at the Bridlington War Memorial on Sunday, November 10th at 11:00 am.

The service will begin at 10:55 am. A parade will leave Station Approach at 10:40 am. Those participating in the parade and band should arrive at Station Approach no later than 10:30 am. After the service, the parade will march onto King Street and be dismissed. Piper Ally Parks will lead the parade.

Free parking for the event is available in all ERYC and Harbour Commissioners Car Parks.

In Pickering on Remembrance Sunday, a service will be held at 2:00 pm at St Peter and St Paul’s Church. After the service, a parade will march from the top of the Market Place to the Memorial Hall, where a short wreath-laying service will take place. Refreshments will be available in the Memorial Hall after the service.

On Armistice Day, a two-minute silence will be observed at the top of the Market Place at 11:00 am.

To help veterans and their families attend remembrance events, Coastliner and York & Country bus companies will be offering free travel on Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day. Current service personnel with forces ID and veterans in uniform or wearing their medals can travel for free. The companies’ buses will also pause at 11:00 am on both days to observe the two minutes’ silence.
