Rebate Update from East Riding Council

East Riding Council has called for people who have not received a letter to apply for the £150 energy rebate to wait after processing 65,000 payments.

East Riding Council stated it has paid out a total of £9.7m to local households after it began processing the rebates earlier this week.

Outgoing Council Deputy Leader Cllr John Holtby said County Hall officials were working to get the payments out as quickly as possible but added it a complex task.

It comes as the Council has written to households not paying local levies by direct debit inviting them to apply for the £150 rebate payments which began this month.

Chancellor Rishi Sunak first unveiled the rebates in February as part of measures designed to cushion the blow from spiralling living costs, including energy bills, on households.

The Council stated a further 35,000 households who pay council tax by direct debit should start getting the rebates from May.

But the authority added they would only get it once council tax payments are successfully received and they could not send out the rebate if direct debits have been cancelled.

Households paying council tax by direct debit get the payments automatically but those who do not have to fill out and return an application form online.

The Council stated the 5,000 households who have done so already are also set to get the payments from next month.

It comes as Council figures from earlier this year showed up to 30,000 households who do not pay levies by direct debit could lose out if they do not apply.

But the Council called on households not paying by direct debit not to contact them and wait for their application letter after getting a large number of calls.

Households in council tax Bands A to D are eligible for the rebate and in the East Riding those receiving reductions for disabilities in higher Band homes are also.

A total of 132,330 East Riding homes out of a total of 159,010 are in council tax bands A to D, around 83 per cent.

All of the 4,200 homes in Goole East are in bands A to D, the highest proportion in the East Riding.

It was followed by Bridlington West, Beverley North and Anlaby Common, all with 99 per cent.

The lowest proportion of Band A to D homes are in Kirk Ella with 54 per cent North Ferriby and Swanland, 56 and South Cave, Newbald and Little Weighton, 58.

Cllr Holtby said: “Distributing funding to support households who are struggling with their energy costs is extremely important.

“However, this is a significant and complex piece of work and the council is working hard to process payments as quickly as possible.”
